We decided to leave at 0200 on Oct 31 to make the 103 NM passage from Bahia San Francisquito to Punta Chivato. This was to be 103 NM and a Norter wind of 15-20 knots sustained. We were looking forward a long day of sailing. The day went fine, the seas were chopping with a short period and late in the day became somewhat uncomfortable but Viva was a charm to sail.
We ended-up stopping at Isla San Marcos 15 NM short of Punta Chivato. San Marcos also offered very good north wind protectio. So instead of pushing all the way to Punta Chivato here was our destination for the night. This allowed us to dropmat at 3:30 PM instead of 5:30PM and we needed a break from the 15-hour passage from San Francisquito.
Next morning we took our kayaks and made to shore, and went on a walk to the village at San Marcos. Very interesting, this Gypsum operation is owned and managed by COMSA, it has been operating for 100 years since 1923. They export to the US, Canada and latin America. COMSA provides free housing, hospital, gym, church to its employees, the village has about 600 residents. We walked around the point and back on a loop. Then left for Punta Chivato around noon.
